Maruti Suzuki posted its highest ever monthly sales in August 2010

During the month, Maruti Suzuki posted its highest ever monthly sales at 1,04,791 units, a 23.56 per cent increase from 84,808 units in August 2009. The company also posted its best figure so far for the domestic market at 92,674 units, a 32.47 per cent increase from 69,961 units in August 2009.

“With economic activities going strong, consumers’ spending powers have increased. It has helped boosting auto sales,” IDFC Securities Director (Research) Ramnath S told PTI. New models by the companies have also created excitement in the market and many of these have witnessed long-waiting periods for delivery, he added.

Homegrown auto major Tata Motors reported a 45.10 per cent increase in its domestic passenger vehicle sales at 25,196 units compared to 17,364 units in the year-ago month.

Another manufacturer Mahindra & Mahindra’s sales in domestic market jumped by 27.39 per cent last month at 27,275 units as against 21,410 units in the same month last year.

Carmaker General Motors India saw its sales climbing 33.71 per cent to 7,941 units in August compared to 5,939 units in the same month last year. Honda Siel Cars’ sales stood at 5,532 units, registering 38.75 per cent jump over 3,987 units in the corresponding month last year.

Another auto maker Toyota Kirloskar Motor reported 26.09 per cent jump in its sales at 6,361 units compared to 5,045 units in the corresponding month last year.

India will overtake China as the world’s fastest-growing major economy as early as 2013 as it adds six times more workers to its labor pool than its northern neighbor, according to Morgan Stanley.

India had eight cars per 1,000 people in 2009, compared with 435 in the U.S., 231 in Russia and 24 in China, according consulting firm Ernst & Young said in February.

Maruti Suzuki to set up third plant at Manesar

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd., maker of half the cars sold in the country, is considering building a new factory after economic growth caused industrywide car sales to jump more than 30 percent this year.

The Suzuki Motor Corp. unit may build a factory with a capacity of between 250,000 to 300,000 vehicles a year at Manesar, near New Delhi, Chairman R.C. Bhargava said today by phone
The report said Maruti Suzuki is considering rolling out 250,000 units a year from its additional unit quoting an unnamed industry source.

Maruti, which has a strong following among India’s growing middle class, is already producing at full capacity and has long waiting lists for some popular models.

“The third plant at Manesar is likely to have almost the same investment and capacity like the second one,” the report said quoting a source as saying at the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) summit in New Delhi on Thursday.
Bhargava estimated the cost of the proposed factory, which would be built at Maruti’s complex at Manesar in the northern state of Haryana, at 17 billion rupees (362 million dollars).
Now Maruti Suzuki India produces 300,000 cars annually at its Manesar plant while its Gurgaon plant makes 700,000 cars a year.

Maruti Suzuki also working on seconde assembly line at second plant at Manesar to add more 250,000 unit to 450,000 by september 2011.by adding the third unit will take its overall capacity up to 1.5 million units beyond 2012.

Shinzo Nakanishi, managing director and chief executive of Maruti Suzuki had recently projected the Indian car market to double to five million units by 2015 and that it needs to be prepared to meet the growing demand to maintain its leadership position.

According to SIAM, the market leader sold 2,82,488 cars during the April-July period this, representing a 47.68 per cent share in the overall 5,92,405 units market. In the comparable year-ago period, MSI had a 53.13 per cent share in the 4,40,069 units car market, with sales of 2,33,811 units.

Suzuki buys out 50 dealers

About 50 Suzuki dealers have accepted buyout offers from the company in the past five months as part of a plan to cut the brand’s worst-performing stores.

Struggling American Suzuki Motor Corp. launched the voluntary program in March to encourage low-volume dealerships to close. The brand now has about 300 dealerships, says Gene Brown, the marketing vice president. That’s down from 354 in March.

Suzuki says it aimed to trim the number of retail outlets to give survivors a better shot at profits through increased per-store sales. U.S. sales topped 100,000 in 2006 and 2007 but fell to 38,689 in 2009 and are off 48 percent so far this year.

Dealers have been hurting. John Voss, who took the buyout, calls his Suzuki store near Dayton, Ohio, “a nonentity.”

Voss says he invested about $250,000 for improvements in his stand-alone store after acquiring the franchise in 2007. But for the past year, he says, he has been selling only four or five new Suzukis a month.

American Suzuki offered poor-performing stores a cash payment and pledged to buy back inventory, parts, special tools and signs from dealerships targeted by the program. Dealerships that participated in the “Suzuki Square” showroom renovation program launched in 2003 were offered $50,000. Stores that did not participate were offered $20,000, Suzuki spokesman Jeff Holland says.

150 got offers

The buyout offers were made to about 150 dealers. The program ended July 31, and Brown says Suzuki has no plans to trim its sales channel further.

“The dealers who have taken the offer were selling on average about two cars per month,” Brown says. “The changes have left us in a better position. Dealer profitability is better, and the profitability of the company is better than last year.”

Per-store sales, not regional coverage, dictated which dealers were selected, he says. In regions where all of Suzuki’s dealerships performed poorly, all dealers were offered buyouts.

That was the case in the southwestern Ohio, where the brand had only three stores servicing Cincinnati and Dayton. Both Voss Suzuki and Dave Arbogast Suzuki in Troy, near Dayton, accepted the Suzuki offer. Arbogast remains a service-only point.

John Voss’ Voss Auto Network includes Chevrolet, Honda, Toyota, BMW, Land Rover, Hyundai and other stores. He says his Suzuki store would be better used as a certified-used-vehicle dealership.

“It’s a shame to let a building of that size sit there and do nothing,” he says. “It was basically doing nothing.”

Sticking with the brand

The region’s third — and now last remaining — Suzuki dealership, Busam Suzuki, is about 35 miles south of Dayton, near Cincinnati.

Owner John Busam declined the buyout offer. Like Voss, Busam says he invested thousands in a new stand-alone Suzuki store. The $50,000 cash, inventory buybacks and other sweeteners were not worth losing the franchise, he says.

“I’ve probably got $50,000 invested just in signs,” Busam says.

Even as Suzuki struggles, Busam, a fourth-generation car dealer, is sticking with the brand.

“Franchises get hot and cold,” he says. “The stuff nobody wants today, everybody wants tomorrow.”

Busam says Suzuki’s problems stem from a lack of marketing, plus tough competition in the United States.

“They just need to find their niche and the right advertising,” he says.

Suzuki’s products are not the problem, says Dave Arbogast: “It’s just a lack of awareness.”

Suzuki launched an ad campaign last month. The 15-second spots, at the beginning and end of TV commercial breaks, feature the new Kizashi sedan and Suzuki’s 100,000-mile/7-year powertrain limited warranty. The ads are running through August in about two dozen markets.

Still, Suzuki’s buyout plan and the brand’s plummeting sales make some dealers wonder whether the brand will stay in the United States.

“My impression was they were setting up to leave the country,” Voss says.

Not so, Brown says. “It’s part of our plan to get stronger, not weaker,” he says of the dealership-buyout program. “It was a voluntary program on purpose. If we wanted to exit, we would be much more aggressive.”

Maruti Suzuki July Car Sales Rise 29% on Record India Demand

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd., maker of half the cars sold in the country, said sales grew 29 percent last month, helped by record local demand.

Maruti sold 100,857 vehicles worldwide in July compared with 78,074 a year earlier, the New Delhi-based Indian unit of Suzuki Motor Corp. said in a statement today. Sales in the domestic market surged 33 percent to a record 90,114 the highest-ever in a month. That beat the previous high of 90,041 units reported in May this year. Exports increased about 2% to 10,743 units.
Sales were boosted by a strong demand for its small cars–Alto, Wagon-R, Estilo, Ritz, Swift and A-Star–which grew 33% to 64,079 units from 48,115 a year earlier, the company said.

Indian auto makers are gaining from a steady rise in the purchasing power of consumers, being aided by economic growth, higher incomes and low-cost loans. These companies are also benefiting from new model launches, especially those in the small-car segment, which are driving more consumers to showrooms.

As many as 11 new cars or refurbished variants have been introduced in India since January this year. Most of the new launches have been in the small-car segment such as the Nissan Micra, Volkswagen Polo, Chevrolet’s Beat and Maruti’s new Wagon-R. Toyota Motor Co. is slated to introduce its small car Etios later this year while Maruti is expected to launch a new variant of its best-selling car, Alto, later this month.

Maruti Suzuki To Restrict Car Exports Due To Capacity Constraints

Automobile major Maruti Suzuki would limit its exports for this year as the company is struck with capacity constraints, the company said. Maruti said it would restrict its car exports to the last year’s level.

“We are not competing in exports (with other carmakers) … we are short of capacity. This year exports will not go beyond last year”, Maruti Suzuki Chairman R. C. Bhargava was quoted as saying.

The highest ever exports of Maruti Suzuki was in the year 2008-09 which was at 1.47 lakh units and the A-star model reached 1.27 lakh units.

It is to be noted that in February 2010, the company called back nearly one lakh of its a-star model cars with fuel leakage problems.

Maruti Suzuki India Limited is the largest automobile maker in India in terms of volumes sold and revenue earned. A majority of the company’s stake is held by Suzuki Motor Corporation.

The major exporting countries for the company include the UK, Indonesia, Uganda, France, Ethiopia, Germany, Italy, Guatemala, Chile and Netherlands.

To address increasing demand for its products, Maruti Suzuki has commenced work to increase capacity at the Manesar plant.

“We have started work at Manesar. But that will take time (to reach full capacity), which would be by 2012″ he told PTI.

In March 2010, the company had announced a Rs 1,700-crore (Rs 17 billion) investment for expanding production by 2,50,000 units at its Manesar plant. Production capacity after the expansion will reach 12.50 lakh (1.25 million) units by 2012.

Bhargava replied in the affirmative when asked whether the company was facing delay in deliveries.

“Almost all our models are in the waiting list . . . I would say the average waiting list is three months for the diesel variant of Swift [ Images ] Dezire.

“We will keep increasing production in whichever way we can primarily to meet customer demand. . .our reasonable target (to meet the demand) is 2012″, he said. Maruti Suzuki sold 10.18 lakh (1.01 million) vehicles in 2008-09 fiscal, the first time in Indian automotive history that a car company has sold over a million units in a financial year.

This included sales of 8,70,000 units in the domestic market, the highest ever by the company in a fiscal.

Asked whether introduction of new models by foreign companies would be a challenge, Bhargava said every carmaker has to introduce new models to address customer needs.

“He (carmaker) should make sure the customer gets something new”. On the growth of the automobile industry, he opined it might grow by 15 per cent.

“Even Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers also said the industry would grow by 12-14 per cent and that is reasonable . . .but we have to look at base effect also”, he said.

Bhargava felt one of the biggest challenges facing the industry is lack of infrastructure.

“I think (lack of) infrastructure is one big problem . . . especially when you look at global developments (in auto-industry)”.

Asked whether the company would phase out Maruti 800 [ Images ], the first small car introduced in 1982, he said, “sometimes, every model has to be stopped . . . Maruti 800 will also end at one stage.

I don’t know when it will happen . . . right now, it is running. . .”, he said. Maruti Suzuki reported a 17.28 per cent jump in sales to 88,091 units in June against 75,109 units in the same month last year.
