India car sale report by makers in March 2011

The Indian automobile industry Friday reported increase in sale in March 2011.with sales of ten leading makers increasing by 25.14 % to 226,161 units, compared with 180,724 units in March last year.

Maruti Suzuki saw at 1104,24 units, a rise of 38.8 %, compared with the 79,530 units sold during march last year.total sales(include export) at 121,952 units during March 2011 compare to 95,123 units during the same period of 2010.

Hyundai Motor sold 31,822 cars in March, up just 1% from march 2010 and company’s exports rose 0.9 per cent to 23,730 units. suzukifan thinks that Hyundai sale should is not good because they reported just small in crease but Arvind Saxena, director (marketing and sales), HMIL, said, although the rate of growth has slowed down. In the second half of the year, we expect HMIL sales to grow at a faster pace.”

Tata Motor declined to 29,543 units,1 % decrease from 29,543 at same period last year.Reported drop of about 40% in sales of small car, Indica sale just 6,937 units this month.Nano sales still strong at 8,707 units.

The worse performing of the month is Honda Siel sales dropped by around 39.7% to 3,576 units from 5,928 units from same period last year . Sales of Jazz reached an all-time low at 152 units.

Ford Motor Company sold 10,485 units in March, up 10.62% from 9,478 units sold same period last year.Volkswagen jump from 987 units to 8,095 units a 720.2% increase from march 2010.Toyota at 9,726units up from 6,911 units.Nissan 2,101 units from 89 units same month last year.

India car sale report in October 2010

Spurred by a festival season considered auspicious for new purchases, auto makers in India registered booming sales in October.

Maruti Suzuki, which sells one of every two cars in India, sold 107,555 units in the domestic market, 50% more than a year earlier. Eight of Maruti’s 12 models have waiting periods ranging from two weeks to four months.

The company also posted its best figure so far for the domestic market sales at 1,07,555 units in October, a 50.32 per cent increase from 71,551 units in October 2009. Its exports last month, however, fell by 18.11 per cent to 11,353. The A2 segment (comprising Alto, WagonR, Estilo, Swift, A-Star and Ritz) witnessed 50.67 per cent growth at 77,502 units compared to 51,437 units in the same month a year ago.

Sales at Hyundai Motor India Ltd, the second largest car maker by sales, also touched a record high of 34,725 units.

Tata Motors Ltd, India’s largest auto maker by sales revenue, sold 58,807 commercial and passenger vehicles, 16% higher than a year ago. The sales of the company’s Nano went up marginally by 2% to 3,065 units and continued a sequential decline

The company despatched 3,065 units of the Nano, down from 5,552 in the preceding month and 2 per cent more than October 2009.

Deliveries have slumped from the 8,000 levels in the last couple of months as Tata Motors stopped producing the Nano at its Pantnagar plant and shifted it entirely to Sanand. Output is gradually being ramped up here and the company has already kicked off open sales across parts of the country.

The company’s Indigo sedan range grew 69 per cent to 8,292 units, thanks largely to the Manza. The utility vehicle portfolio, which got a new entrant in the form of the Aria crossover, was up 38 per cent at 3,389 units. Total car sales for Tata Motors grew 22 per cent in October with the Nano remaining virtually flat.

Mahindra & Mahindra’s utility vehicle sales grew 21 per cent at 15,908 units while its entry-level midsize car Logan’s sales more than doubled to 1,079 units.

GM and Ford also had a good October, thanks largely to their small car portfolio. With the Chevrolet Beat and Spark contributing good numbers, GM clocked 10,051 units, a growth of 36 per cent.The company sold 3,251 units of Spark, 3,021 units of Beat, 957 units of Cruze and 1,594 units of Tavera in the reporting month.

Ford’s sales almost tripled to 9,026 units with its Figo compact car crossing the 50,000 mark since its launch in March.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) said that its sales had jumped 16.85 per cent at 6,602 units during October. The company had sold 5,650 units in the corresponding month last year, TKM said in a statement, attributing the growth to healthy sales of Innova, Corolla Altis and Fortuner.

Maruti Suzuki posted its highest ever monthly sales in August 2010

During the month, Maruti Suzuki posted its highest ever monthly sales at 1,04,791 units, a 23.56 per cent increase from 84,808 units in August 2009. The company also posted its best figure so far for the domestic market at 92,674 units, a 32.47 per cent increase from 69,961 units in August 2009.

“With economic activities going strong, consumers’ spending powers have increased. It has helped boosting auto sales,” IDFC Securities Director (Research) Ramnath S told PTI. New models by the companies have also created excitement in the market and many of these have witnessed long-waiting periods for delivery, he added.

Homegrown auto major Tata Motors reported a 45.10 per cent increase in its domestic passenger vehicle sales at 25,196 units compared to 17,364 units in the year-ago month.

Another manufacturer Mahindra & Mahindra’s sales in domestic market jumped by 27.39 per cent last month at 27,275 units as against 21,410 units in the same month last year.

Carmaker General Motors India saw its sales climbing 33.71 per cent to 7,941 units in August compared to 5,939 units in the same month last year. Honda Siel Cars’ sales stood at 5,532 units, registering 38.75 per cent jump over 3,987 units in the corresponding month last year.

Another auto maker Toyota Kirloskar Motor reported 26.09 per cent jump in its sales at 6,361 units compared to 5,045 units in the corresponding month last year.

India will overtake China as the world’s fastest-growing major economy as early as 2013 as it adds six times more workers to its labor pool than its northern neighbor, according to Morgan Stanley.

India had eight cars per 1,000 people in 2009, compared with 435 in the U.S., 231 in Russia and 24 in China, according consulting firm Ernst & Young said in February.

Maruti Suzuki To Restrict Car Exports Due To Capacity Constraints

Automobile major Maruti Suzuki would limit its exports for this year as the company is struck with capacity constraints, the company said. Maruti said it would restrict its car exports to the last year’s level.

“We are not competing in exports (with other carmakers) … we are short of capacity. This year exports will not go beyond last year”, Maruti Suzuki Chairman R. C. Bhargava was quoted as saying.

The highest ever exports of Maruti Suzuki was in the year 2008-09 which was at 1.47 lakh units and the A-star model reached 1.27 lakh units.

It is to be noted that in February 2010, the company called back nearly one lakh of its a-star model cars with fuel leakage problems.

Maruti Suzuki India Limited is the largest automobile maker in India in terms of volumes sold and revenue earned. A majority of the company’s stake is held by Suzuki Motor Corporation.

The major exporting countries for the company include the UK, Indonesia, Uganda, France, Ethiopia, Germany, Italy, Guatemala, Chile and Netherlands.

To address increasing demand for its products, Maruti Suzuki has commenced work to increase capacity at the Manesar plant.

“We have started work at Manesar. But that will take time (to reach full capacity), which would be by 2012″ he told PTI.

In March 2010, the company had announced a Rs 1,700-crore (Rs 17 billion) investment for expanding production by 2,50,000 units at its Manesar plant. Production capacity after the expansion will reach 12.50 lakh (1.25 million) units by 2012.

Bhargava replied in the affirmative when asked whether the company was facing delay in deliveries.

“Almost all our models are in the waiting list . . . I would say the average waiting list is three months for the diesel variant of Swift [ Images ] Dezire.

“We will keep increasing production in whichever way we can primarily to meet customer demand. . .our reasonable target (to meet the demand) is 2012″, he said. Maruti Suzuki sold 10.18 lakh (1.01 million) vehicles in 2008-09 fiscal, the first time in Indian automotive history that a car company has sold over a million units in a financial year.

This included sales of 8,70,000 units in the domestic market, the highest ever by the company in a fiscal.

Asked whether introduction of new models by foreign companies would be a challenge, Bhargava said every carmaker has to introduce new models to address customer needs.

“He (carmaker) should make sure the customer gets something new”. On the growth of the automobile industry, he opined it might grow by 15 per cent.

“Even Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers also said the industry would grow by 12-14 per cent and that is reasonable . . .but we have to look at base effect also”, he said.

Bhargava felt one of the biggest challenges facing the industry is lack of infrastructure.

“I think (lack of) infrastructure is one big problem . . . especially when you look at global developments (in auto-industry)”.

Asked whether the company would phase out Maruti 800 [ Images ], the first small car introduced in 1982, he said, “sometimes, every model has to be stopped . . . Maruti 800 will also end at one stage.

I don’t know when it will happen . . . right now, it is running. . .”, he said. Maruti Suzuki reported a 17.28 per cent jump in sales to 88,091 units in June against 75,109 units in the same month last year.
