Indiatimes: Import of Japanese automobiles, spare parts to stop

Japanese automobile companies in India will stop importing high-end cars, bikes and critical spare parts as their parent companies have downed shutters of factories in Japan after earthquake and tsunami played havoc with operations.

“We are assessing the impact on vendors that supply to our parent company Suzuki Motor Corp,” said Shashank Srivastava, chief general manager (marketing), Maruti Suzuki.

Japanese auto major holds 55% stake in India’s largest automobile company Maruti Suzuki which imports some engines and gears from Japan for its cars.

Shrotage of critical spare parts may hamper production in the near future. Honda Siel Cars India, which imports parts for its sedan Accord from Japan, may have to battle with supply problems as its plant at Saitama has been closed.
