Maruti sales at record high as cars buck usual dip

Vehicle sales continued to zoom in May as well, with market leader Maruti Suzuki crossing 1,00,000 units in monthly sales for the first time. Two-wheeler leader Hero Honda too had record sales.

Maruti’s total sales were 102,175 units in May. This included 12,134 units of exports. Of this, 90,041 units were sold in the domestic market, up 27.2 per cent over corresponding month last year. This is the highest-ever domestic sales in a month. The previous highest monthly domestic sale was 84,765 units, in February 2010.

The country’s second largest carmaker, Hyundai Motor India, reported an increase of 15.52 per cent in domestic sales for May, at 27,151 units. The company had sold 23,503 units in the domestic market in May 2009, Hyundai Motor India (HMIL) said. Total sales in May increased 7.30 per cent to 46,808 units from 43,624 units in the same month last year.

Hyundai, which is also the country’s largest car exporter, however, saw its exports slide 2.31 per cent in the month. The company sold 19,657 units in overseas markets in May compared with 20,121 units in the year-ago period. Hyundai attributed this to a planned annual maintenance shutdown that pulled down production volumes.

Tata Motors, whose products range from heavy trucks to the ultra-cheap Nano car, said May sales rose 41 per cent. Sales of passenger vehicles in the domestic market from the Tata stable (including 2,163 units from Fiat of whom the Indian major is a distributor) increased 42 per cent to 23,489 units, compared to 16,563 in the year-ago period.

General Motors too reported robust growth in sales in May, with its small car Chevrolet Spark and newly launched hatchback Chevrolet Beat accounting for more than half the cars the company sold. GM sold 8,225 units during the month, an increase of 61 per cent over May 2009.

Utility vehicles and tractor leader Mahindra & Mahindra saw sales jumping 69 per cent from a year earlier. The company’s year-to-date domestic sales stood at 52,075 units, as against 39,198 units in May 2009, an increase of 33 per cent. Exports jumped by 186 per cent.

The total year-to-date utility vehicle sales – with models, including the Scorpio, Xylo, Bolero and pick-ups – stood at 36,938 units, as against 31,067 units in May 2009, a growth of 19 per cent.

Mahindra’s total sales stood at 28,486 units in May 2010, as against 16,866 units in May 2009, a growth of 69 per cent.
