i10 out sells Wagon R, becomes best selling in segment
The Hyundai i10 has replaced the Maruti Suzuki’s Wagon R to become the best selling car in the ‘over 1 litre of capacity’ segment in the country.
The South Korean major also achieved another milestone as the i10 was also rated the most fuel efficient petrol car in the compact car segment in India. The i10 is powered by 1.2 litre Kappa engine and is conforms to the BS IV emission norms. The car features the best ARAI-certified fuel efficiency among all the petrol cars on offer in the country.
In the financial year 2009 -10, about 149,242 units of i10 were sold in the country breaking all previous records. The Japanese rival Maruti Suzuki’s Wagon R was able to sell 144,898 units in the financial year dropping to the second place.
Arvind Saxena, Director, Marketing and Sales, Hyundai Motor India Ltd, said, “The extraordinary fuel-efficiency of Hyundai i10, best among the petrol cars in its segment emphasizes Hyundai’s overall technology leadership
Mr. Saxena pointed out that the car achieved a mileage of 19.81 km to a litre of petrol during its tests. He expects the good mileage of the car to help it grow its share in the India market which is price sensitive.
He further said, “We hope that the best-in-class mileage of i10 will enable us to increase our market share by reaching out to a larger customer base. We are also glad that i10 continues to be No. 1 in its segment. This reflects the confidence customers place in our brands”.
Meanwhile, Maruti Suzuki is betting on new Wagon R powered with a more efficient K series engine. It will also feature a new gear box and an aluminium engine which is more fuel efficient than its earlier versions. The company has priced the car only a bit higher as it aims to increase volumes in the Indian market. The company also plans to upgrade the Alto with a new K series engine to compete in the market.
